Karndean is named after the flooring company that produces it. It began as a family business in 1973, which has since expanded to be one of the world’s biggest flooring companies.
Karndean is a type of vinyl flooring that is mainly formed from limestone (calcium carbonate), polyvinyl chloride and additional pigments. This is formed into a five layer structure (two layers of PVC backing, one clear embossed wear layer also made of PVC and a polyurethane protective coating.
As with other kinds of flooring material, you can get different layers of Karndean thickness, specifically with the wear layer. If the wear layer is thicker then it will be more durable, as well as allowing more that can be done with the finish, such as more texture and bevelled edges.
A common concern with materials is whether the design will match your interior décor. Fortunately, there are a wide range of different designs available. For example, it is possible to choose natural effect looks such as sturdy stone or a wood style.
There is also the advantage of customisation, allowing for the floor to fit around a range of different interior requirements.
The flooring is made from a tailored vinyl, so it can be used throughout the house, including high traffic areas. It is also highly water-resistant, so it can also be used in the bathroom. It can also be placed over undersoil heating up to 27 degrees Celsius.
Karndean is non-porous. This means that it does not absorb dirt, bacteria or germs, making it more hygienic than other surface options available.
A common concern with vinyl flooring is that it might be slippery. This is not the case with Karndean, as its surface treatment and commercial grade slip rating means that it is suitable for use throughout the home.
While the material is very durable and low maintenance, in the event that a plank or tile needs to be replaced, these can easily be replaced if necessary. For fitters, it is also a very easy material to work with when it comes to the initial installation, after a period of 24 hours when the material is acclimatised to a temperature between 18 to 26 degrees Celsius. It is also recommended you maintain this temperature for 24 hours after the flooring is installed, with underfloor heating turned off at least 48 hours after installation.
